Did you know?
On the 23rd of July, we celebrate the nyabinghi of King Selassie I the first’s Earthstrong (celebration of your birthday)
Who is king Selassie I the first?
Haile Selassie I, original name Tafari Makonnen, (born July 23, 1892, near Harer, Ethiopia—died August 27, 1975, Addis Ababa), emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974 who sought to modernize his country.
To many Rastafarians, this shows the divine nature of Haile Selassie, as Haile Selassie is therefore related to Solomon’s father King David, and therefore to Jesus.
What is Rastafari?
Rastafarians believe in the Judeo-Christian God and call him Jah. They believe Christ came to Earth as Jah and the rebirth of Christ. Some Rastafarians believe that Christ was black, while many focus on Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as the black messiah. A religious movement among Black citizens that teaches the eventual redemption of Black people and their return to Africa. The Rastafarians use marijuana for a ritualistic purpose, forbid them from cutting their hair and worship Haile Selassie as a god / Jah.
What happens at the 7-day nyabinghi?
During the celebration of nyabinghi chanting the roles of men and women are different. Men are expected to remove any hair coverings, while women are expected to cover their vow(hair). When entering the Tabernacle (also known as the Tent of the Congregation) you have to take a vow and cast all your sins in the fire of purification. A group of men typically organise themselves in a line or semi-circle and are assigned to beat the drums throughout.
Many people don’t know the importance of the 23rd of July. It is a huge celebration in most African countries.
