Glossary of paranormal terms used in this story

Ghost
A ghost is a non-corporeal (or incorporeal) manifestation of the spirit or soul of a dead person which has remained on Earth after death. The word is derived from the Latin corporeus — “of the nature of a body” and corpus — “body” (living or dead), hence non-corporeal refers to  — without a physical body, presence or form.

Ouija
Ouija board, also known as a talking board or spirit board. Ouija practitoners believe that one can receive messages from the dead during a gathering known as a séance. The term Ouija is derived from the French oui (yes) and the German/Dutch ja (yes).

Paranormal
Paranormal is a broad term used to describe a wide variety of reported anomalous (abnormal, unexpected, not standard) phenomena. The Journal of Parapsychology defines paranormal as ‘any phenomenon that in one or more respects exceeds the limits of what is deemed physically possible according to current scientific assumptions.’

Séance
A séance is an attempt to communicate with the dead, led by a medium (person who possesses the ability to communicate with the spirits of deceased people — and apparently, sometimes pets. The word séance comes from the French word for ‘seat’, ‘session’, from Old French seoir, ‘to sit.’ In English, the word came to be used specifically for a meeting of people to receive spiritualistic messages.

Supernatural
The supernatural refers to forces, events and phenomena which are not observed in nature, and therefore cannot be measured.
