If all the countries of the world came together and started teasing each other South Africa would probably be called the drama queen among the world’s countries.

This country of ours always has something that we are up in arms over. There’s always something or someone that must be put down or brought to justice somehow. And the last month has been no different. The entire country is up in arms over statues that they say remind of us our ugly Apartheid past.

If you’re one of those people who never even spend five minutes watching the news, reading a newspaper or searching the internet, then you probably won’t know what I’m talking about. So let me break it down, then.

This all pretty much started with a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT) who was convinced that the Rhodes Statue at the university’s Upper Campus represents all the things that are wrong with the university’s relationship with non-white students. Soon he was not only joined by other students at the campus, but students from other universities like the University of the Western Cape as well. The movement became huge. There were plenty of speeches made. There was television, radio and newspaper coverage of all the madness. And the university finally gave in to the demands and the statue was removed.

Of course, as we all probably know, once something starts in this country of ours it takes a while to slow down or even stop, so it was no surprise that the EFF joined in on the party and the madness spread to other parts of the country. Just a few days ago someone was arrested in Gauteng for defacing a Mahatma Gandhi statue. I can only wonder what is going to e destroyed next. A Nelson Mandela statue maybe? I can’t be sure. That’s how crazy and powerful this new movement is.

But one question still remains above everything else, though: is all of this really worth it? In other words, are these people not just wasting their time and energy when they call for these statues to fall?

Well, according to some on Facebook it is a huge waste of time. These people believe that destroying or removing these statues is like treating the symptoms of the Apartheid disease, without actually treating the disease itself.

An example of this is if you went to a doctor telling him that you have flu and that it’s giving you a headache. Instead of the doctor then giving you medication to take both the flu and the headache away, he only gives you medication to treat the headache and when you walk out of his office you still have the flu. That’s what these people say removing the statues is. All the statues may be destroyed or removed to some museum away from people’s eyes, but it will not really change the things that are wrong with South Africa. It will not change the racism that still exists in some people’s minds. Politicians will not suddenly start caring more about the struggles of our people than their own pockets. And it definitely won’t change the shacks that our people live in because of Apartheid, into mansions.

When we look at things in this way we discover that this whole movement is just a huge waste of time.

But that’s just my opinion. Now I want to hear what yours is.

#ChatBack: Is the destruction or removal of all these statues that remind us of Apartheid a good idea or bad idea?

And why do you think so?
