I don’t know how many times I have come across people who are bugged by my choice of hair. There have been so many debates about African women and their choice of hair. I’m talking weaves and braids! Most people have come up with conclusions like “it’s un-African and that black people are not comfortable with their natural hair.”

If you ask me, I have no idea how such conclusions came about. Talking for myself, I braid my hair because it’s such a mission to keep up with afro. And I like variety of having different hairstyles and it’s a lot easier to grow your hair when you braid your hair or put on a weave or braids. What’s so wrong with wanting longer hair? How does having unnatural hair make me less African? Is my culture and origin defined by my hair?

When I change my hair, it’s not because I’m uncomfortable with my own hair nor is it because I hate my hair or I don’t not appreciate how I look when I wear my own hair.

The only issue I have with braids and weaves is when they’re not perfectly done and messy. When braids/weave look trashy, don’t match with your own hair, then, I have a problem, a huge problem! So ladies if you don’t know how you want to wear your hair, ask your stylist or me.

There are different ways in which you can get your hair done. For someone who prefers natural hair-cuts, you can always go pixie but keep in mind, it’s a lot of work. Almost every day you have to blow-dry and curl. Thank God for holding sprays! Wash your hair regularly, at least every week. Get a heat protector, shampoo and conditioner. Trust me; they have done wonders for my hair. Washing and conditioning your hair will keep your scalp clean, your hair strong, and get a split end remedy!

If you’re into braids, go for a shiny braid product, super long and straight, it makes braids look clean and wavy, it’s very soft as well. Should you want to have curls, you can always plait and put hot water, careful not to burn your scalp though. This trick works on twist, single braids, pick and drop. For cornrows it’s always best to use Yaki braid. That one is medium and soft and not as shiny so it will need moisturizing. Always choose the colour that matches your hair and if you want colourful braids, change your hair colour.

As for weaves, they look better if they are quality. There are different brands but I would go for a quality product that’s 100% Natural hair; easy to brush and iron or curl! When you buy weave, you have to check if it’s washable, can you curl it? Does it tangle? Good quality weaves last longer and look real. They are nicer as compared to cheap products.

Gents, there isn’t much to say only this: keep it clean and simple. Brush cuts and chiskop are sexy AF. Nothing is a turn off like a guy in s-curl.

Sooo there you have it! get your hair done, relax your hair, keep your afro or pixie, have your braids on or weave, as long as it’s done, neat, and doesn’t make me want to cut your head off when I look at you.

What are your thoughts on weaves/braids/natural hair?
