She always stared at the ring; it was a diamond ring. She moved back to my place. I got a job as an Accountant and she got a job as a PR in a construction firm. I always took her to her workplace then walked to mine. Her work at TIM Constructions was situated at the right side of the garage, and CAR COMP where I worked was on the left side.

One day she woke me up with the noise of slamming doors. It is 6 a.m., too early for me to be up; I still needed my sleep.

“What is wrong now, Lucy? Lucy?” I shouted. She came from the lounge.

“Why did you leave the bathroom a mess? This is not a hostel,” she shouted.

I woke up and went to her. She was furious, I could see. I looked at her and then she faced the other way.

“Bathroom, really? Lucy?” I spoke calmly.

“Why don’t you listen… she said.

I stopped her by kissing her lips. She loved my lips. She always bragged about that I was a good kisser.

“Don’t do this again,” she said and went back to the kitchen.

I went to shower and made sure that the chamber was clean. Her commotions made me depressed. I didn’t want her arguing with me. She had made the bed to look smart, the house was clean. Breakfast was already settled. I made a cup of coffee. She liked juice and I wanted coffee. After she bathed and got dressed we sat together eating breakfast.

I remembered my parents always arguing for small things. The next day they would be lovey-dovey. It felt like that was what was happening with Lucy and me except we weren’t married yet.

We walked down to catch a taxi and I noticed Gary was in the same taxi. He was talking loudly, making so much noise. Gary was a people’s man and everyone in the taxi was laughing. I sat with Lucy, holding her hand. As we were dropping out at a garage I realised I had to talk with Gary before we got to work.

“Baby, I will walk with you tomorrow, I need to talk with Gary,” I said and pulled Gary. I didn’t notice that she was sad. We started to walk.

“Why did you do that for? Look at Lucy, she is sad,” he said.

“She will be fine,” I said.

“You are ready to lose this chick. Don’t cry on my shoulder when she’s gone. She is your woman, please her,” he said.

He put his hand on my shoulder. I looked back and she was gone. I hoped she would not be angry. I promised I would always walk her to work but today I needed to talk to Gary. She can’t be angry, can she?

“What did you want to talk about?” he asked.

“The profits and the sheet not balancing well,” I said.

“Does work come first? Lucy must be your first,” he said chuckling.

“She will be fine Gary. Really?” I said rudely.

I was getting irritated and walked into the office. I just hoped Lucy would not just leave again. I knew she would be angry so I took my phone and texted her.

I am sorry baby. Will make it up to you tonight.

Its fine.

The way she answered she showed that was angry. Sometimes we just press buttons and don’t realise love will be gone. I had to save my relationship. I loved Lucy too much. If I kept breaking my promises I could lose her. A broken heart is hard to lead but she had to trust me.

She made colours, not fade them away. She was my love and my life. She was my love who was dearer than my life. I wanted a future with her. No one could replace her.

“Dude, let’s talk about the sheet,” Gary sat down opposite me.

It took an hour to sort the balance sheet. We realised that some money was used but not recorded in all the books. At lunch time I bought lunch and took it to Lucy’s office.

“I am sorry baby,” I said softly.

“It’s OK. Romeo, I am fine serious,” she spoke.

We ate our lunch quietly. Her eyes looked at the ring a numerous times. I hoped she wanted what I wanted with her.
