There were once two brothers who cared for each other to an extent that they did everything as if they were twins. Jim was only 10 years old while Ben was 13 years old. Their father was so rich, he had a lot of money, big land and goods, but he was so ill that at any given time he could die.
On a fine spring day, their father was announced dead. The father left them money and land and entrusted them to look after each other and use it wisely. One week later their aunty came to stay with them. At first everything seemed fine, the aunty treated them kindly, but she was cruel and greedy at heart. She planned to take all the inheritance without the kids’ knowledge.
On a cold night the aunty sent two strangers into the boys’ room to kidnap them. She told the strangers that she would reward them, so the strangers did as they were told. Everything seemed fine in the morning. The aunty looked happy until she heard a knock at the door. It was Jane, their friend. Jane came every morning to play with the boys.
The aunty responded, “I’m coming just now.” As she was saying that she went out the back door and left Jane knocking non-stop.
Jim and Ben were locked in an old building where no one lived. They started crying and screaming and no one could hear them. As the strangers were about to kill them, they started crying again, begging for mercy.
So piteously did they plead that one of the kind strangers felt sorry for what they were about to do and tried talking to the other stranger. “Let’s spare their lives!” he shouted.
“Don’t be a fool! Let’s kill them so we get our money.”
They kept on disagreeing to an extent that they started fighting each other while the kids were scared to death. Finally, the bad-hearted stranger got knocked out and they managed to escape. The good stranger told the kids, “You are safe, let me go and get food.”
The stranger never returned, but he went to the cruel aunty to collect the reward. “The job is done,” he said, and was rewarded.
