“I’m not even angry at you, Thabang.” Lerato said those words, sitting across the table, staring at her husband and the father of the child she was carrying.
“Baby, let me explain. You were never meant to know.” Thabang sobbed, he was only in boxers.
Of course after his wife found him in a very compromising position with someone she didn’t expect.
“Is that why you always made those remarks? Because, you were protecting your own skin? Is that why, Thabang?” Lerato asked, slowly stirring the Rooibos tea in front of her.
“I always knew, but then I met you, you were perfect. I finally thought my father was right. That I was broken, and meeting you healed me.” Thabang looked down at his hands that were clasped together.
“I guess I’ve always known. But, because I was desperate to get my mother to be proud of me. I got involved with you. My mother never cared about the degree I have, all she wanted was a son-in-law.” Lerato laughed, a bit.
“I’ve disappointed her once again, once she learns of this, you won’t be that perfect son-in-law anymore.” Lerato continued, “I know I hurt you, and somehow I also know that there’s no coming back from this.”
Thabang looked up at his wife, well, soon to be ex-wife. Who could blame Lerato? No woman could stand for this, no woman.
“Thabang, I don’t blame you, we both got in this relationship for the wrong reasons.” Lerato said.
“I know.” Thabang looked up, his face filled with tears. “But, you have another thing coming if you think we’ll break up!” Lerato shouted. Thabang looked at her, wide eyed.
“This never happened. What I saw today never happened. We shall never speak of it, are we clear?” Lerato continued, standing up, holding her huge baby bump. She was due anytime. Thabang nodded, he’d never seen this side of Lerato before.
“He’s crazy if he thinks I’ll raise this baby alone. I’ll fix you!” Lerato said, as Thabang walked in. He still hadn’t thrown any clothes on himself. He came closer to her.
“You smell of him. Get away from me!” Lerato pushed him.
“So, all these late nights ‘working’ at the office. You and Tshepo weren’t really working were you?” Lerato laughed.
“No.” Thabang replied in a low voice.
“Okay. How long has this been going on for?” Lerato asked.
“I didn’t realize that I loved him until a few weeks back.” Thabang admitted.
“Love? Love him? Thabang I’ve been married to you for eight months, dated you for a year and you’ve never once told me that you love me. Suddenly you love him?” Lerato shouted, just then she felt a sharp pain on her stomach.
She woke up in a hospital. She recognized the hospital smell; after all, she was a doctor. As she looked at her side, she spotted her husband. He had a smile on his face, and he had something on his arms. Lerato closed her eyes again, she opened them, she saw clearly.
Thabang was holding their baby, wrapped in a beautiful pink blanket. They were expecting a girl child. Thabang stood up, he handed the child over to Lerato who took the baby from him.
“It’s a boy.” Thabang told her.
“A boy?” Lerato asked, their doctor had told them it was a girl.
“I was just as surprised as you, when the doctors announced that.” Thabang smiled, beaming with pride. Just then, Tshepo walked in, carrying a baby bag.
“What is he doing here?” Lerato turned to Thabang.
“I asked him to buy a few boy clothes for Teboho.” Thabang said.
“You already named him?” She asked. Thabang nodded. The room went quiet for a while Lerato went to the bathroom. When she came back in, she saw how happy the two men were, as they were playing with baby Teboho. Thabang never was that happy with her.
“Thabang, I know what I said. But, I want a divorce.” She said, calmly.
“Lerato…” Thabang said, handing the baby over to his gay lover, Tshepo.
“Don’t.” Lerato shot her hand up.
“We can fix this. Our son deserves a home with both parents.” Thabang said.
“I know. But, he doesn’t deserve to be in a home where daddy doesn’t love mommy because daddy is gay. Relax you two have my blessing.” Lerato smiled as baby Teboho wimped as if in agreement with what his mother was saying.
