Bracelet

On her dying bed, her last words were: “Take this bracelet with you and go fulfil your dream for I won’t be there when you become an Engineer.”

It all sounded weird and confusing at that moment but little did I know that she was dying.

It was 2016 on the 25th of may when I woke up and found everyone I’d never expected to see around. It made me wonder if a party was being hosted without my knowledge, so I ran as fast as I could to find my grandmother who was my best friend. But she was nowhere to be found. I asked someone whom I saw there and I was officially told that my grandmother was dying in her room. I didn’t know what to do, tears streamed down my face as I ran towards her room.

As I entered the room I saw her lifeless body lying there, but I convinced myself that everything was going to be alright. She was the only one I shared my dreams with, no one else knew I wanted to become an electrical engineer other than her. She made me a bracelet from electrical wires, which she slowly handed it to me.
“It’s your dream which I won’t be there to share with you. But when you carry this with you then you’ll know that I’m there with you every step of the way.”

After being told to leave her house I heard people crying as a sign that she was no longer with us. I too cried my heart out, cursing death for causing me such pain and misery. Until now, all I’m left with is a bracelet. I live in worry everyday because I might fail to fulfil my dreams and fail her. I really love my bracelet even though those who see it don’t, it is special to me because if I lose it I would’ve lost the one thing that is not replaceable.

Over these few years since she passed away I’ve started to see life in a different way. I’ve seen life in a way I never thought I would. My bracelet deflects all the negative things people say about me, especially those who don’t support my dreams and those who think I won’t make it. I have learned that the best person I can rely on until I die is myself.

It’s funny that I had to learn all that from a bracelet which is the only thing in my life that gives me hope. It is one thing I wouldn’t give away in exchange of a diamond because it is a diamond itself.
