Thandiwe

My eyes opened the moment I heard a knock, i look at time on my phone and realise it is still early, the time read 11:39 a.m.

I kicked of the blanket and headed towards the door and yanked it open “We saw that you didn’t come up for breakfast.” The cook said holding a tray with a covered plate on top “I guess it’s no longer breakfast it’s a brunch now am I right?” She handed me the tray “Lunch is at 12:00 till 2.”

I nod and watched her as she walked back inside the house, I closed the door and went and sat down on the bed.

I opened the plate and found 3 bread of slice, eggs and bacon with an orange juice.

The portion was small but it beat eating porridge with no sugar cause that’s all there was at home, maize meal.

I began shoving food down my throat, as if I had not eaten in a while or maybe it was because it has been a while since I ate such food.

In a few minutes the plate was embarrassingly clean, I gulped down the juice.

Even if the food was not enough to fill an adult’s stomach, I was at least glad that I have a roof over my head and food to keep me going.

My mind trailed back to when I was home and how there was no food at all home and had to eat pap and salt just so that I could have something solid in my stomach, I shook my head removing the memory not wanting to bring much pain for myself than I had already endured, I the tray with plates ti the kitchen.
