The child was crying
On his own and uncared for,
Mother danced nights away
With loveless men,
Drinking might push
days down the canals
Of the years
And when the mother returns
The child is a man,
She realises she can’t
Go on drinking no more,
And struggles to understand
The man who’s not a child anymore.
