“Head Up, Head Down”

I walked in with my head held high,

Hoping she’d see the love in my eyes.

I thought she’d cherish the care I gave,

But her heart was one I couldn’t save.

She looked at me and softly said,

“I know you love me, but instead,

My heart belongs to someone new,

Though I care for you, it’s not like you do.”

She gave me a hug, a forehead kiss,

An apology wrapped in bittersweet bliss.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, then drew the line,

Friend zoning my heart, leaving love behind.

So I turned and left, head hanging low,

Carrying the weight of what I now know.

From head up in hope to head down in pain,

Learning love doesn’t always feel the same.
