Rest in peace Hector Pieterson
Born a rose but killed as a seedling
A pupil yet a soldier of freedom
I can’t imagine how your mother was feeling
If you never perished so young
I wonder what you would have become
Perhaps a president, perhaps a leader
Instead, you became an inspiration for everyone
Your sacrifice was never in vain
You are the reason I now enjoy days without the oppressions of Apartheid
I never knew who you truly were
I only saw a lifeless body in a black and white photograph
Someone with horror painted upon their face holding a lifeless body in their arms
Terror in her eyes as they ran down the street
Thank you for sacrificing your soul, it set my bound life free
South Africa finally became what you always dreamed of but never lived long enough to see
I’m so proud of you although your body has grown cold
I cherish my freedom every day as though it were gold
I hope from Heaven you smile as you see
South Africa is free from racial oppression finally
I salute you my brother, Rest In Peace
