We usually use capital letters for the main words in titles for films, plays, books, poems (e.g. Animal Farm; Sizwe Banzi Is Dead; Cry, the Beloved Country; The African Dustbin; Finders Keepers).

Words that we usually do not start with capital letters in these titles include articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) and prepositions (e.g. on, at, to, from, by). Notice in the examples above which words in the titles do NOT start with capitals.

When you write in direct speech, the first word of the sentence that is in quote marks must start with a capital letter (e.g. She asked me, ‘Have you read this amazing story?’).
