Cell phone shop interior. KEEGAN is standing behind the counter, helping a customer. He spots Sindi walking in and frowns. The customer finishes up and Keegan looks over at Sindi expectantly, but without warmth. He looks a little annoyed.

KEEGAN: Sindi. What are you doing here? Come to buy a phone?

SINDI: No, Keegan, I wanted to … I wanted to talk to you. Maybe on your break?

KEEGAN: Nah, I only get a half hour break. And I have to still go buy my lunch. What’s it? My boss doesn’t like anyone here if they’re not buying anything.

SINDI: I need to talk to you alone. I’ll wait for your break.

KEEGAN: But I already saidโ€“

SINDI: It’s important, Keegan.

Keegan exhales in exasperation; extremely irritated with Sindi. He wants to slam his fist down on the counter, but stops short because he does not want anyone to see him angry.

KEEGAN: Fine. Let me see if I can take my break now.

Keegan disappears into a staff area and comes back with his jacket in his hand. He starts putting it on as he and Sindi leave the store.

KEEGAN: Can you make it quick. Like I said, I still have to go buy my lunch.

They stop a little distance from the shop. Sindi is shaking. She cannot look Keegan in the eye. She looks distracted by the people walked past them.

KEEGAN: Okay Sindi. Now what is it?

Sindi takes a deep breath.

SINDI: Keegan โ€ฆ a few months ago, you know, we … we were together. You remember.

KEEGAN: Is that what this is about? No man, Sindi, you need to get over it. Seriouslyโ€“

Sindi interrupts him.

SINDI: Wait, just stop! Stop for a second and listen.

Keegan is silenced.

SINDI: I promise I only just found out now. I wish this wasn’t true, but … I’m pregnant.

Keegan, shocked, opens his mouth to say something, but nothing comes out. He paces a few steps, turns back to Sindi, leans his face in close to her and points his finger at her face.

KEEGAN: Stop lying.

Sindi leans away from the accusing finger and Keegan’s angry face. She looks afraid.

SINDI: I’m not lying. I found out two days ago. I’m five months.

Keegan steps away, his hands on his head, pacing again.

KEEGAN: You know, this is typical! And I know you’re lying because this is what you girls do. How can you tell me you found out now? How long ago was it that were we together? Four months? Five months? If you are pregnant, there’s no way it’s mine anyway!

SINDI: It is yours. I didn’t know. I promise, I didn’t know I was pregnant. I always had problems with … (speaking softly) with my period.

Sindi looks down at her hands, unable to continue looking Keegan in the eye.

SINDI: So I didn’t think anything was wrong. But I checked at the clinic and they did an ultrasound and everything. And Keegan, I haven’t been with anybody else yet. The last person was you.

Keegan paces up and down, starting to panic.

KEEGAN: Well, is it too late? I mean, to do something? To have an abortion?

Sindi nods, downcast.

KEEGAN: Are you joking? How could you let this happen? This is nothing to do with me! You can see here, what I’m doing.

Keegan gestures back toward the shop where he works.

KEEGAN: I’m trying to make a life for myself! Not get stuck in a rut with you. How could you not take care of yourself? This is nothing to do with me, Sindi. This is your fault. It’s nothing to do with me!

Keegan storms off, leaving Sindi standing alone and vulnerable. She does not cry, but looks small and lonely.

SINDI: (To herself) I didn’t make this baby alone. I’m more trapped than you are.

She rubs her stomach and hangs her head down, sighing deeply.
