Another week went by and Lucas’s phone stayed on voice mail and Fiona gave up hope that the nanny job and her new life in UK was still a possibility.

She was at work that Friday, midnight, and the drunks and party-goers were out. One car load of load music filled with rowdy young men after another. Night shift on the weekend could get crazy.

Fiona was dealing with yet another problem driver who couldn’t seem to get his wallet out of his pants.

She hated these drunk drivers. She wished the traffic police would set up shop right at the station and arrest them. She once mentioned it to Alma, who mentioned it to someone in the traffic police. They attempted to get permission from Silas to do just that, but he told them no. It was private property and he did not want the police with a breathalyser on his forecourt. That would mean the end of any late-night weekend business. How many people might get killed by these drivers didn’t seem to enter into it.

Fiona was watching her customer trying to sort out his money to pay for the petrol, then she looked up, and saw Elias standing next to a silver BMW, smiling. She finished with the idiot and then called to the other petrol attendants, “I’m taking a break!”

She walked over to Elias. “It’s good to see you! I’ve been trying Lucas since he got fired and he’s not answering. I thought I’d lost the job completely.”

“Lucas was stupid stealing that phone. I’ve sent him off on a few errands for me out of the country. But I still have the nanny job if you want it.”

“Yes, yes! I want it.”

Elias smiled. “Great. I have two girls flying out on Wednesday. I’d like you to go with them. Do you have a passport?”

“Yes.”

“OK, let me get it from you tomorrow. We fly from Gaborone to Johannesburg and then in the evening get on an overnight flight to London. We leave Gabs at 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday. I’ll be travelling with you so you have nothing to worry about. Do you think you can be ready?”

“Yes, I can be ready!”

Fiona couldn’t believe her luck. Elias was here and she would be leaving on Wednesday! She’d need to get organised quickly. Elias was about to leave and then she remembered.

“What about the contract? I wanted my sister to have a look at it. She’s a lawyer.”

“Of course. I’ll bring it with me tomorrow when I collect the passport. See you then.”

He drove off and it was only then that she remembered she still needed to tell Zero about all of this. It was not going to be easy.

But like Claudia said, it was her life. She knew what was best for herself.
