Don’t we owe it to our inner child to fulfill things we never got to do when we were children? I never got to ride a bicycle back then; mainly because I never owned one and because my family always considered it an activity more suitable for boys than girls.

It’s weird, but riding a bicycle sounds so easy in concept – you get on and you cycle, right? Well, at least that’s what I thought; but it was actually mentally and physically draining.

Luckily, I had a great coach, from Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy, Xolisa Makubalo. I remember his encouragement and excitement when I got one element right, even though I was a beginner. My focus for the day was balance, which I feel is harder than cycling.

I messed up a lot of times. I felt frustrated with myself a lot; I got competitive when I heard there was a group that came and one of them got it right the first time. I wanted to get it right the first time too. That’s crazy though. How can you do something perfectly when doing it for the very first time?

Well that one person in that group did; but not everyone can, and that should be okay, no? I know my grandfather won’t approve which is why I still haven’t told him.

Age is just a number; we are never too young or too old. Go and try something you haven’t tried before. The worst that can happen is that you fail.

Tell us: What would you like to try that you haven’t yet?
