I’m not big on make-up, and I’m not very good at either, but I do know the very basics and I feel the basics is all I need to know. I would like to highlight how you really don’t have to break the bank to achieve minimal makeup, with a few essentials.

How I learnt makeup?

I knew nothing about makeup, and I was never really interested in it, but when my best friend started dabbling in the art, I was fascinated by all the colours, shapes, shades and different products. I wanted to try it too, but not nearly on the scale that social media presented it. I wanted it simple, so that a person would still be able to recognise, “Oh, she’s wearing makeup, but not too much.”

So, my bestie, now a fully-fledged makeup artist, taught me the very basics.

Why do I wear makeup?

It’s fun. As simple as that may sound, wearing makeup is fun; it’s like you get to be someone else for the day. I enjoy being dolled up and being cute on certain occasions. It makes my outfit feel like it’s a step up, something a little extra added to the mix, and because I don’t wear makeup often, I look different, but not completely unrecognisable.

What products you may need:

To achieve minimal makeup, you just need a few makeup products.

  • Primer – This is used to set your face before you start with your makeup. It hides some of the pores, so making the makeup application process a little easier.
  • Foundation – This helps with giving you a more even complexion and tone and forms a base for the makeup look.
  • Concealer – As the name suggests, it conceals areas that may not be desirable, like dark circles or pimples.
  • Blush – Gives your face a little bit of colour to your face, more so the cheekbones.
  • Mascara – Makes your eyelashes longer.
  • Eyeliner – Highlights your eyes and makes them pop.
  • Eyeshadow pallet – If you have a neutral set of eye shadow colours, you can use them to make your eyes stand out and bring colour to your look.
  • Lipstick or lipgloss
  • Setting spray – You spray this a few times so your makeup sets comfortably for the day, without having to constantly retouch.

Skincare

A good skin routine really helps with a very minimal makeup look. This can mean simple things like moisturising often, wearing sunscreen daily, eating healthy and drinking plenty of water. It could even be something as simple as never sleeping with your make-up on. This is important because then the makeup application will be easier and you won’t need a lot of product.

Remember, that makeup will show up as texture and won’t look as flawless and natural as it does on social media. You, and others will see the makeup, and that is okay.

Final word

What’s important is that you do what works for your skin and what makes you happy – even if that means not wearing make-up ever! Take care xx
