I didn’t sleep that night. I was imagining our first kiss and thinking about how it would be. Thursday came and she called me.

“Hello,” I said happily.

“I’m no longer coming to school today. Precious told me that the principal told them that the Grade 12s should not come to school today. I called the principal and confirmed it. I’ll see you on Tuesday because Monday is a holiday,” she rambled on without giving me a chance to speak. I wasn’t going to say anything to object because I could hear the conviction in her voice.

So I said the only thing a disappointed person could say, “OK, I will see you Tuesday then because I have no choice. One day without seen you is like I have taken the whole year without seen you. Tjo, I miss u a lot.”

“I miss you too. Sharp ke, we’ll talk again soon, bye.” She hung up.

Friday came by. It was that big day that everybody was waiting for. I called her and she answered, “Hello.”

“I miss you and I can’t wait to see you.”

She sang for me, “hang in there, it’s just a matter of time. I say one day, one day we’ll be together”.

“Yeah, I will try to hang in there till the right time arrives. Sharp, I’ll call you later.”

She spent her day at the Matric dance with her classmate, Thiza, who’s also her Mxit contact. They fell in love that day. I called her Saturday.

“How are you doing this morning?”

“Fine,” she said unhappy.

“How was trip?”

“Look there’s some guy at my gate coming for me, hold on I will talk to you later.” She said trying to avoid me.

I was on hold for almost 30 minutes until I decided to hang up. I was worried about her but I didn’t ask what was bothering her.

I went to sleep wondering what is going on with her. I even dreamt about her dating some guy that night .On Sunday after 12 p.m. She told me she was going to town. I was even more worried. I wondered what she was going to do in town after 12 because many shops would be closed after 12 but I didn’t confront her.

Sunday night we were chatting over Mxit.

“Hey, I have been missing you. How are you doing mara?” I said.

“I am not good,” she said in a low voice.

“What is wrong, is your granny troubling you?” I asked concerned.

“No, it’s me. I hate myself.”

I knew what was coming my way. Because that is what I also say when I want to break up with someone.

I said, “Please don’t tell me that what I dreamt about is true.”

“What did you dream about? She asked amused I told her about my dream and she laughed at me.

“Today I was in town and I bumped into my ex, Sipho, and I realised I can’t live without him.”

I signed off on Mxit immediately and tried to sleep. It was cold but I was sweating. I signed in again and I sent her a text.

“I can’t let you go. I can’t imagine my life without you. I won’t give you up that easily, I will fight for you!”
