“What do you mean nothing?” I asked. I needed a simple yes or no. But girls must always play.

Wena, what do you think? Do you think I love you or not?” she asked, not avoiding my eyes.

“I may say you love me while you don’t. So I don’t want to guess. You just tell me if you don’t love me. Just say so and forget about how I will feel,” I knew she loved me; it was in the way she looked at me, the way she smiled at me. I already knew but I just didn’t want to tell her that.

“If I didn’t love you I would have just said that. I wouldn’t care less about how you feel,” she said. When she saw the look of worry in my eye she continued.

“I don’t want to make things complicated between us,”

“Complicated how?” I asked worried.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” she said, turning her face away from me.

“If we were meant to be, would you just let what we feel for each other go just because you don’t want to make things complicated between us?” I asked trying to search her face.

She didn’t respond. She said nothing.

“Look, after people had started calling us Romeo and Juliet, they got me thinking about you. I examined you and I realised that I like you,” she said finally, trying to break the silence.

When she said “I like you” I thought that she meant that she liked me as a friend. So I kept quiet.

“I love you, that I know for sure but…”she said after a long pause.

“But what?” I asked feeling so confused.

“I don’t want to make things complicated between us. We’re in the same class and the same study group. I say let’s wait until our final exam then we can start dating,”

I kept quiet for a while trying to reason to myself.

“OK, I will wait for you. I don’t mind waiting for you because I love you. I will wait. I wish I can wind the clock so that our date for our final exam arrives early.”

A few weeks passed by. There was a trip for the Matric dance and I hadn’t paid for that trip but Jurity was going. The trip was to be on Friday. The Tuesday of that week I accompanied her home and we spent more time together that day. We became closer that day.

On Wednesday she didn’t come to school. She had gone to town to buy her dress for the Matric dance. We were chatting over Mxit on Wednesday night. I told her how much I missed her and that she needed to come to school the next day. She said she would and she asked what I wanted from her…I said a kiss.

Tell us what you think: Is Jurity right in saying they must wait until they finish their Matric or could she be hiding something?
