The robbers were local boys, the age of 15, same as Thabo, but he looked like a 20-year-old because his body was so giant, tall and handsome too. The owner didn’t know how to thank him. He knew giving him food wouldn’t be enough so he decided to hire him unlawfully and secretly. He gave him a small room at the back of the restaurant where no one would notice him, and nice old clothes. He did not wear a uniform. Thabo looked very neat and clean standing as usual asking for money and food but knowing in his heart he was at work and he was pretending. People left surprised, asking themselves some questions without answers. Some were thankful to the person who gave him clothes and washed him clean. Some thought maybe he used the money they donated to find a place to live.
Lizzy was the only daughter of the restaurant owner, and she was a very beautiful girl, a yellow bone. She was born in the township and raised by her rich parents. She lived a luxurious life and she didn’t know anything about rural life. At school, Lizzy had some friends who all had boyfriends except her. She was struggling to find her real lover. Most of the boys her age were afraid to approach her because they started wondering where to start telling her their feelings.
At the restaurant, she was sitting at a table near the window, drinking coffee and watching the snow piling on the window pane. She saw Thabo standing outside trembling but wearing a warm jacket similar to her father’s, but she didn’t pay much attention to that. She was about to finish her mid-year exams, so she visited the restaurant to refresh her mind. She looked at Thabo, who was looking different and handsome.
She knew Thabo was homeless and she called him to come in but he hesitated to join her at the table. Thabo was afraid about what people would say when they noticed him talking and drinking coffee with his boss’s daughter. He doubted joining her but ended up entering the premises for the first time in his life. He remembered that his boss was on holiday overseas.
They talked and laughed; it felt like they were a couple in a relationship for five years. He didn’t believe he could date his boss’s daughter, a princess of the king. The smell of coffee made Thabo feel at home and forget about the cold outside and what had happened to him previously.
The winter season brought him a queen, he felt like he was his own boss. People and workers were surprised at what they saw; it was like something on television. They asked themselves questions without answers. Love was in the air between the two, they were attracted to each other like electric charges. Thabo was two years younger than Lizzy, who was 17 years old and in matric. Lizzy never stopped rolling her big round eyes, while Thabo was speaking with his golden charming voice, looking her deeply in the eyes.
Thabo never lied to her about his background but that did not make her change her mind about loving someone who was uneducated. She was over the moon. After a long chat, a few weeks later, Thabo went with Lizzy to her parents’ place. Thabo felt like he was in heaven. Sleeping in a room with a luxury bed was a first in his life; in his room he slept on the floor.
