Weeks went by and our relationship became more than just Mxit dating. We were actually starting to be real girlfriend and boyfriend. I visited her every weekend and it was nice being with her. One day while I was hanging with my friends, they asked me when I was going to have sex with her. That thought had never even crossed my mind.

Nathi, the real sex machine amongst my friends, told me that if I don’t have sex with her someone would do it for me. I wasn’t really worried about what he said but he did freak me out a bit. He gave me a weird smile then he winked at me, my heart started pounding. Bridget and I have never talked about sex before. I didn’t even know how to start a conversation about it. But something in Nathi’s smug look made me determined to talk about it.

Later that day I talked to her about the topic. She said she doesn’t know when it will happen between us, she was thinking maybe after marriage. I was fine with that – we were both virgins after all. I thought it would be great if we broke each other’s virginity.

As I was sitting watching TV at home that afternoon, my grandfather entered the house. I don’t know where he came from I was still lost in the sex talk I had just had with my girlfriend. He sat next to me and asked, “Boy, why do those friends of yours have different girls every time I see them?”

I didn’t know what to say but I had to tell the truth.

“Well Baba they have many girlfriends I guess.”

He nodded his head knowingly and went to his room. He stood at the door and asked, “Wena, how many do you have?”

“One!” I said proudly. And that day my grandfather knew I had a girlfriend.
