Mr and Mrs Adams were humble and generous people, Vivian thought. Charmaine and Susan were outside when the car screeched on their gate. Charmaine went to the gate, surprised to see Vivian coming out of the car. She looked and saw a white woman who was talking to Vivian. She walked past her mother who pulled her.

“What do those people want?” she whispered.

Vivian pulled her hand and walked to the house. Tatenda and Tino hugged her when she entered the house.

“Where is your Grandpa?” she asked.

“He went to work,” Tatenda said calmly.

Vivian pulled her kids into the bedroom. They wore clean clothes and their worn shoes. She packed her clothes and her daughters’ clothes. Charmaine entered and saw Vivian with a bag. She was puzzled as she grabbed Vivian’s hand.

“Where do you think you are going?” she asked.

“Do you care?” Vivian walked away after pulling her hand.

“Go, go. I don’t give a damn. But you are making a mistake. Those whites will treat you badly,” she shouted.

“Like what you and your daughters did? It’s better, they are strangers. I won’t have my own family treat me worse than the whites,” she said gently and walked out of the house.

Susan looked at the gate and saw the white woman and saw Vivian leaving with her daughters. She looked at the door and found her mother looking on sadly. She went and hugged her. The Adams left with Vivian and her daughters.

They watched the car leaving as Wilson entered the gate holding a plastic. He walked slowly after a long day at work. Charmaine and Susan went into the kitchen and Wilson sat on the sofa to rest. He noticed the quietness, looked around and went to check Vivian’s bedroom, but it was empty.

“Charmaine, did Vivian get discharged? Where are the children?” he asked but nobody answered.

Wilson couldn’t sleep, he tossed right and left. His heart was not at ease after Charmaine told him whom Vivian left with.

“Why don’t you go out for fresh air?” she asked.

Wilson woke up and went to the kitchen. He made a cup of tea. He then decided to say a little prayer. He wished things weren’t so hard for Vivian. He hoped she was safe. He knelt down to pray.

“Father, protect my daughter wherever she is. Do not let it destroy our relationship,” he said quietly.
