Crag had always wanted to win the post of the senior prefect at his school. He was brilliant and obedient. It was every student’s dream to become the senior prefect it was an honour to anyone who got it. Most importantly, the school fees of such a student would be discounted, hence it was a competitive post. Crag knew his chances were slim: there were several students that the teachers loved and would likely recommend for the post. He wished in his heart to get the post. He could never forget the day it all started.
“Crag, you’ve got to come and see this,” his best friend said, dragging Crag towards the noticeboard. “Though there are several students contesting for the position, you only have two competitors you should be worried about. First on the list is Fredrick, his father co-owns this school. He is also cunning and extremely wealthy. Rumour has it that his father paid a bribe to become a board member of the school. He won’t even bat an eye to do the same for his son. Also, he is quite popular among the students. Everyone loves him, he buys lunch for almost everyone in his class from time to time.”
“And who’s the second one?” Crag sounded defeated.
“Second is Mala. She is just destined to be a good politician. She is very tactful and smart. She convinced the school to renovate the bad buildings last year. She must have some plans.”
That day Crag went home discouraged. What was he thinking? Surely the others must have laughed when they saw his name on the list. He had been lucky to get into the school through a scholarship that would expire soon. The senior prefect position was a great opportunity as the prestigious school also opened several doors for him. He would get access into good universities. There was a lot at stake.
Crag met his elder brother Robert at home. They shared everything and Robert understood him. His brother was also on a scholarship at his university.
