***Four Years Earlier***

It was April 16, five days after my 15th birthday. It was a breezy autumn afternoon, and I was standing by the fast food place with a friend, Zanele. She and I had a thing, but we were never exclusive. School learners in their green jerseys and orange shirts had flooded the street, and some were waiting for the lady to prepare their orders, just like us.

“You’re such a player,” Zanele said, frowning as she spotted me eyeing one of the grade nine learners.

“What? A little admiring never hurt anyone,” I responded, laughing.

“She’s a kid, bro,” Zanele said, folding her arms. “She’s not even hot.”

“She’s not a kid. She’s in grade nine, I’m in grade ten,” I responded, shrugging.

“She’s not your type,” she snapped.

“And you are?” I asked, giggling, but instead of responding, Zanele just clicked her tongue and we stood in silence. “Do not tell me you are mad. You are the only woman for me,” I added, breaking the silence and joking.

When Zanele was about to answer me, a black Audi with pink rims stopped in front of us. The woman who drove it stepped out. She was wearing a simple jean dress that was too short, and it exposed her flawless thighs.

“Didn’t this woman play as a child?” I thought.

The woman’s hair was in a neat ponytail, and she had a chain around her neck that went down to her exposed cleavage. She was also wearing white converse All Stars.

The passenger door to the woman’s car opened, and a Butch lesbian stepped out and followed her. They both placed their orders, and when they walked back to the car, she turned. I do not know why, but she caught me staring at her, and the whole world stopped when that happened. I was intimidated, but I was sure as hell not prepared to lose that ‘staring contest’, if it can be called that.

We held our gaze, I did not even flinch!
