After taking the diary to the living room, Mylah and I nestle on the sofa with a fleece blanket covering the both of us. She is holding the diary in her hands as her head drops down on my shoulder. She then looks up at me with her green eyes, and I nod in response.

“Read it,” I say.

Before reading the diary, she clears her throat and then slowly opens it. Her hands are shaking, and I realise that it must be very hard for her to do. In a way, that moment is the first time she is ever connecting with her mother. After a while, she starts reading.

Dear Diary.

Today I met a young man. He was so clumsy that he dropped everything he touched, and when he spilled coffee on me, I was very angry! I wanted to rip his insides out and feast on them! Ha-ha-ha, I am joking!

Well, maybe I was tempted to eat him, just a bit. His white skin and blue eyes make him look very delicious.

Anyway, even after our bad first meeting, I liked him. No, really, I did! He is not that good looking, but I liked him, a lot. Mom says it is not good for me to have a human companion. She thinks he is not good enough. She wants me to marry Marty. Marty is also like me, he is a half beast. He is handsome and dreamy, but he does not hold my attention in that way.

I hope to see Mr Clumsy again!

Love,
Janine.

After reading, Mylah looks up at me, and then smiles. “I guessing the clumsy guy was you?” she says, laughing.

“Hey, I was still young,” I respond, giggling.

I did not know that Janine was that sweet, or that she kept a diary, or that she liked me that much. I thought I was just there to make her feel good. I thought she just treated me like a transaction.

“Let us go to the next page,” Mylah says, turning to the page.

Dear Diary

I saw the young, clumsy man again, and guess what, he asked me out on a date! He was so shy about it, he was stuttering here and there, but I thought it was cute. Anyway, his name is Adam, and I cannot wait for our date tomorrow night.

Love,
Janine

“Oh my God, this is making me shy, please stop!” I said, screaming and laughing loudly.

“I cannot stop. I think your love story is cute. Cheesy, but cute,” Mylah says, laughing and pinching me.

“I cannot believe your mother wrote all of that,” I say.

“Why?” she asks.

“She did not seem like the mushy, get emotional type, trust me,” I respond.

“Well, you have it here in black and white. She was mushy and deeply in love with the clumsy guy,” Mylah says, teasing me.

“Hey, I am still your daddy,” I respond, laughing.

“Sorry, but it is true. Anyway, we have to go through this diary. Maybe it will help us, maybe it won’t, but in a way, I already feel closer to mom,” Mylah says, smiling and closing the diary shut. “I am hungry. How about I make a few tuna and mayonnaise sandwiches for us?” she asks.

“Please,” I respond, smiling at her.
