“There is a new surgery with a new doctor you can go to somewhere down this address,” Joyce, who was Mike’s sister, suggested after Shamiso asked her if she knew any good doctors. “She is the best doctor,” she added, smiling her white teeth off.
Shamiso was very hopeful while looking at the card in her hands. Joyce was busy with her work, and they worked at the same company that dealt with mine work. Shamiso was an acting director at the company, since the recent one was fired, and before her new position, she was the managing administrator.
“Tell Mr. Makai that I have to attend a personal matter and that I put his files on the table,” Shamiso said, blowing Joyce a kiss as she swung her handbag over her shoulder and left.
Once in the streets, Shamiso looked for the address on the card. The doctor’s name was Doc No, and she wondered if it was a name or surname. ‘No,’ she thought while letting out a sigh.
The surgery wasn’t far from Shamiso’s building. She was nervous as she walked to it, though, mainly because she was worried if whether the doctor would be able to help her sick mother or not. A tall lady welcomed her as she entered the surgery. Lindsay, who was the lady that welcomed her, was dressed in her formal navy suit with a pony tail, but you could tell the hair was not hers, though. She was sorting out files in a storage cupboard when Shamiso walked in, and she motioned with her hand towards a chair so Shamiso could sit.
“Is doctor No in?” Shamiso asked curiously.
“Yes she is in, just give her five minutes,” Lindsay replied with a smile.
While waiting for the doctor, Shamiso looked like she was in a hurry. She tapped her foot and checked her wrist watch every few minutes. She hoped to see the doctor five minutes after sitting down because she needed to hurry back to the office to finish her report. It was already after lunch, but she was reliable and always finished her tasks at work, which is how she became an acting director.
The door to one of the offices screeched opened and Doctor Nomatter walked out wearing a white coat. On seeing who it was, Shamiso panicked and jumped up from her seat, but Nomatter didn’t notice her until she dropped her phone on the floor.
“Shamiso,” Nomatter said, speaking with her mouth wide open.
“That is doctor No,” Lindsay said, and Shamiso quickly grabbed her phone and bag in order to leave, but Nomatter blocked her way.
“Hey sister,” Nomatter said calmly. She had a bump on her tummy, and she pulled her white coat over it in order to hide it from Shamiso. She didn’t want her to see it because she knew that, if Shamiso knew, then their father would know.
Shamiso didn’t reply to Nomatter’s greeting because she was furious and frustrated. But, even with everything that was happening, Lindsay didn’t notice that the tension between Shamiso and Nomatter was getting worse because she was answering calls and making bookings.
“Long time no see,” Nomatter added after a while. She tried grabbing Shamiso’s hand in greeting, but she refused.
“I hate you and your family,” Shamiso yelled then quickly dashed to the door.
“I also hate my family,” Nomatter said, also walking to the door.
On hearing that, Shamiso turned around and walked back. Nomatter then entered her office and, even though she didn’t know why, she felt it was the right thing to do. Shamiso followed her into her office and sat down opposite her. There was dead silence in the room for a while, and Shamiso felt that if she didn’t start talking, then she would never.
“What happened?” Shamiso asked curiously.
“My family is full of betrayers,” Nomatter responded, speaking in a cranky voice. “They act as if they love you, but one day they will kill you.” Her insides were quivering, but her voice sounded normal.
Shamiso could sense the sadness in Nomatter’s voice, and she felt her heart pounding. “We don’t choose our family, but I just couldn’t be associated with …” as she was about to continue, she got interrupted by Nomatter tapping the table with a pen. “You are here with me, right?” she asked, shrugging her shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” Nomatter said, sadly looking down. She narrated what made her separate from her family, but she didn’t tell Shamiso she was pregnant and due to give birth. She knew that no one would notice it since she had a curvy body. The baby sat on her hips, making them big, and her belly was a bit too big to notice. She couldn’t accept her sister stealing her fiancé, and the worst part was that their parents supported her devious deeds.
“I’m sorry,” Shamiso said while rubbing Nomatter’s shoulders. “I’m getting married soon, so please come to my wedding?”
“I’m sorry for what happened to you, but I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” Nomatter said, then chuckled.
