Lying on the bed depress her more. She was desperate to know if her vomiting was a symptom of being laid. She only wanted to know if she was pregnant or not. Kelvin had been sending text messages but she wouldn’t read them and deleted them. He sent 15 messages, asking when she will be free; he stopped when she didn’t reply. Maybe he will find someone else soon and forget her, she thought.

She opened her eyes in the dark, watching everything in the room. Things didn’t look real, but like creepy things crawling in the dark. She switched on the lamp beside her bed and took a novel, ‘Hours In the Darkness’ from her drawer. It was a horror story, she wasn’t petrified with horror movies and books, she loved them and they always gave her piece of mind. She finally fell asleep when she couldn’t keep her eyes open.

The alarm woke her up. She opened her eyes, yawning. She pushed the alarm off and it fell on the ground and became silent. She threw the blankets away and stood up, picking the radio up which had the alarm.

She sighed and quickly made her bed and darted in the bathroom. She dressed into her two piece navy blue suit. She felt hungry for white bread with peanut butter. She ate the bread and drank a glass of milk. She never loved having breakfast but why now?

On her way to work, she craved mud found sticking on the tree or ground. Even though it was a city with no trees or mud, people sold it at the market. She walked down to the market, clinging to her bag under her armpits. There was an unusual smell that filled the market.

“Umm, what is that smell?” Nomatter asked.

“It’s amagwinya – vetkoeks,” the vendor replied.

“Please give me three bags of mud,” she said nervously.

Nomatter handed her a R20 note and she got the mud which was in a small plastic. She slipped them in her bag.

“Keep the change,” she walked away quickly.

The vendor looked at the money and shook her head when she saw how fast her buyer ran off. Nomatter now realised that she was pregnant, she had all these cravings.

Upon arriving at her surgery, she rushed to the lab and looked at the test. She was three weeks pregnant. She looked worried. Lindsay looked at her when she came looking for her.

“The patient is waiting. Oh ma’am what does the test say?” she asked with her hand on her boss’s back.

“I am pregnant,” she tried to be strong but her eyes were watery.

“Oh sorry, but what will you do?” Lindsay asked.

“I don’t know,” she said, walking to her office to assist her patients.

“You will be OK and this is a blessing in disguise,” Lindsay rubbed her arm softly.
