When the sun was up, I quickly took a bath and went to work. It was outside Hatfield, a bit closer to the airport. I didn’t wait for my friends, I had texted them, saying that I would meet them at work. The taxi took me straight to the farm with the other people who liked hoarding fruits and vegetables from the farm.

“What is this happening in Hatfield?” the driver said looking at the man who sat next to him.
“The youth are dying,” he answered.

“It’s because of those drugs. Whoever is selling them is bullshit,” a woman hissed.

I looked the other way. I felt like I would tell them it was that ‘friend’ of theirs, that she pretended to be holy than thou but she was evil. If only many saw it that way, then Hatfield would be safe and our children would not die from drugs.

“Why are the kids buying drugs? Drugs are addictive. They must be careful,” the man sitting next to the driver spoke.

“Our kids won’t listen. We tell them what is good and bad but they always choose the bad,” the woman hissed.

I was getting uncomfortable, why were they blind? I arrived at work and started to work. Thelma and Brenda were not there yet. The farmer sent me to harvest some grapes with the other youth. There were 4 harvests to be done: grapes, apples, bananas and potatoes.

After a heavy day in the field, I dressed back into my clothes. My overalls were stained with the juices of grapes, my fingers changed colour to purple. I saw Brenda and Thelma sitting by the shelter.

“Friends what’s up?” I asked.

“Nothing hey, we are tired,” Thelma answered.

“Let’s go home,” I persuaded them.

“Let’s rest for an hour,” Brenda said.

“See you tomorrow then,” I said waving my hand.

There were a lot of taxis outside the gate of the farm. If Mr David was chased away like the other whites who had their farms taken away from them, we would be jobless. I was happy for this job, a lot of youth were benefiting. Mr David only hired the youth because he said the old had poor health and we were strong and our bodies were good for hardworking. I managed to get in a taxi after a long queue. Thelma and Brenda would arrive later, I had left them behind.

I took a walk home when the taxi dropped me at the rank. Suddenly I noticed something unusual in Nancy’s house. Nancy was pulling a man then shoving him onto the ground. I hid by the big trees which were on the middle. No one would see me because it was dark.

“Please don’t kill me,” the man said.

I noticed that it was one of the men who bought the drugs from them. Nancy held a big knife on the man’s neck. They were at the back of the house.

“This guy must die,” Tafi came out from nowhere.

“Please I beg you…” he begged.

Tafi slapped him and he fell on the ground. I wish I could record it but I had a Nokia 5110. I just had to watch.

“Where is our money?” Nancy shouted again, putting the big knife on the man’s throat.

“I… I will pay it back,” he pleaded.

“Why did you sell open?!” she shouted.

A siren echoed from the neighbourhood. It was an ambulance. They both stood quietly while the man had tears on his face.

“We will deal with you later,” Tafi pulled the man inside the house. Nancy followed and closed the door. What were they going to do to that man? I walked home. I didn’t know if I should report it or not. No one would believe me anyway.
