She walked confidently as if she had won the lotto. She didn’t notice Brendan standing in the street staring at her. She smiled when she saw him.

“Finally, your parents have awarded you,” he said touching his chin.

“Yes… I… I,” she shivered.

Don’t take heed of him. Be strong, I don’t have weak children,” the voice said in her ear.

“Yes, I got to buy all my need. My dad doesn’t award me, he makes sure all my need are satisfied,” she said cautiously.

“Oh how lucky. I lost my wallet and it has my promise bracelet,” he said sadly.

“Shame,” she answered.

“I don’t care about the money, my precious bracelet is important,” he said looking across the street.

His eyes met Brandan’s and he smiled waving his hand.

Debbie started to walk but Brian pulled her hand.

“Come to my place for a drink?” he said.

“OK, let’s go,” she said.

Brian poured her a drink but her hands were all over Brian’s body. They kissed and went on the bed in the other room. They stripped each other’s clothes until they were naked. Brian stayed with his mother who separated from his father. The house didn’t have modern things since Brian’s mother couldn’t afford it but she worked hard for her two sons.

Debbie woke up confused, she didn’t know what had happened. She remembered kissing Brian but what led to it still was lost in her mind. She looked at the room: an old wardrobe with no doors stood near the window. The curtains were faded and the blankets smelled like urine. On the floor were their clothes, his pants near the door.

“Oh damn, did you use a condom?” she whispered.

“What? You led me on… don’t you remember?” he answered rubbing his eyes.

Debbie stood and started wearing her clothes. She quickly dressed into her green and yellow dress.

“Where are you going? We need to talk,” he shouted.

Debbie was already out of the house and didn’t hear Brian shouting. She wanted to forget she slept with a stranger. She remembered she first had sex at seven with the boys from next door. It looked fun and harmless, but she didn’t feel good with what happened with Brian.

She walked home fast and saw her cousin Lina waiting for her by the gate. Lina was dropped off by a car before Debbie was by the gate, she didn’t see her until she was close.

“What the hurry? Are you OK?” she asked.

“Yes Lina,” she said unlocking the front door.

Debbie opened the fridge and took out lamb chops for supper. The meat was frozen so she put in a bowl half filled with water while Lina sat on the couch.

“You must learn to be a Satanist. I want you to join our cult,” the voice spoke in her left ear.

Debbie searched for “Satanism” on the internet. She smiled with the information she found. She needed candles and this weird sign and also her blood to join it. While browsing, Lina walked in.

“Debbie, your parents raised you a Christian. What the hell is this?”

“Go to hell. I choose my path and they were trying to choose for me,” she chuckled.

Lina tried to switch the laptop off but Debbie threw her claw on her face and scratched her 5 lines on the face. Blood dripped on her cheeks and she was astonished.

“What are you doing?” she shouted.

Debbie stood up angrily. Lina tried to run but Debbie choked her till she was motionless. A sound of a car frightened her and she let Lina fall to the ground. Her eyes were not even blinking. She stared at her hands trembling.

The cracking of the door sound made Debbie pull Lina’s body to the other side of the bed and put a duvet over it. She rushed to the kitchen.

“Sweetie, how are you?” Christine entered, holding plastics.

“Good evening Mama,” she answered, marinating the lamb chops.

“You can cook today I am so tired,” she sighed and put the plastics on the table.

“It’s OK Mama,” she said feeling guilty.

Christine went to the bedroom while Debbie put the meat on a greased tray and placed it in the oven. She cooked curried rice and made two of her parents’ salad; coleslaw and chakalaka. Calvin entered holding his bag and newspaper. She tried to forget her own cousin dead in her room.

“This smells good,” he said kissing her on the cheek.

Debbie remembered again she had to throw the body in a bush, but only when her parents are asleep. No one will see her, she thought.
