All around me are a million eyes of pressure.
Gazing at me without tiring.
I’m trying too!
Pressure’s all around me.

They tell me
“Apply for that job”
“Of course they’re hiring there.”
“There’s no way you’re still unemployed even now”
“By now you must’ve found something if you were really trying”
“You sure have a nice appetite for someone with no income”
“You’re nicely gaining weight aren’t you?…
Staying at home treating you real good?”
“Here are some WhatsApp and Facebook links”
“Gracious look! Mrs Mae’s son has bought a brand new Polo”
“Huu how I envy Mother Lorna, her husband is a true provider!
Look at the beautiful shoes and her power suit”
“If only you were working, there’d be less pressure on us.
Are you sure you’re sending those CVs?”

They bombard me with questions and pressure.
I also thirst for independence.
I keep knocking
Those doors don’t open for me
Yet.

But I’m drowning in the pressure.
Pressure to perform
Pressure to conform
Pressure.
Pressure.
Pressure.
