Liso and her mother are in the car – they have just arrived at school. All that is heard is the music playing. Neither of them is starting a conversation. Noluvuyo keeps looking at her daughter but she doesn’t dare to speak. Finally Liso lifts up her head, sadness washing over her face.

NOLUVUYO: (alarmed) What is wrong sisi? You know you can talk to me, right?

Liso nods her head while looking straight ahead.

Noluvuyo follows Liso’s eyes and sees Linda laughing with her new friends.

NOLUVUYO: Oh baby! Come here…

They hug each other. Liso starts crying and sobbing.

LISO: Can we just go home, Mama?

NOLUVUYO: I would vote for that, but now your school rules don’t allow us. I’m sorry, Nana.

Liso experiences a panic attack right at that moment. Her mother is there to help her through breathing techniques as she directs her to inhale and exhale at certain intervals. Once the episode has passed, Liso speaks.

LISO: Thank you for saving me, Mama. Who will save me when you are at work, and I’m left with these people who treat me like a stranger?

NOLUVUYO: (Hiding her tears) Your teachers will be there for you sisi and I am only a phone call away. You also have the ability to rescue yourself when no one is there, okay?

The school bell rings, signalling the start of a school day. Liso grabs her essentials and goes into the school while her mother breaks down in the car before driving to work.

LINDA: (shouting) Look who’s here!

Linda carries on mocking Liso as they walk towards the class. Another group of learners join them.

LINDA: Hey bestie! Ready to collapse today? Do you know that today we have two guests from the African Society of Public Speaking? The top speaker today will be selected to join the society – and as you know, that’s definitely my spot!

BONKE: Vele chommie! You have no competition.

LINDA: And I hope there’s no lonely kid poorly hoping for my spot.

She says this while eyeing Liso, who gives her no response.
