In life we experience many obstacles, challenges and hardships. Sometimes we face them alone, afraid and confused. However, there is that someone from whom we can seek guidance and inspiration, someone who can simply save us from our troubles…

Growing up, I always thought that heroes are those people who we see on television, but my mom proved me wrong. As a young adult I now realise that heroes are ordinary people with no capes or masks, just loving hearts and open arms. They save lives and innocent souls on a smaller scale, but nonetheless, they change the world.

My hero is my mom. Against all odds and no matter what life threw at her, she is still standing. She has always represented herself as a strong black woman to me. My mother has always been there for me when no one else was. She even sacrificed her life to save me, I probably will remember that day for the rest of my life.

It was 24 June 2016, I was 16 years old when she rescued me from a burning house. I thought that I was going to die, there were flames everywhere and I could feel the heat. I’ve never been that scared in my life. I battled to breathe, I thought it was over.

But luckily my supermom, my hero, came to my rescue. She saved me from a burning house. My supermom sacrificed her life in order to save me. I am proud to call her my supermom because she saved me when no one was willing to. Everyone else feared for their own lives, but my supermom had the courage.

My mom is my hero in many ways, not just because she is my mom and I love her. But because of how she overcame challenges.

Early this year she had a mental illness. It was so heartbreaking to see her like that, doing weird things. I thought she wouldn’t survive but here she is, still standing. She inspires me to do greater good and she doesn’t just inspire me, she protects me. Despite all the challenges she went through she is still strong, loving and caring. She has a golden heart.

Raising me as a single parent, I know was not easy, but today I am this young and responsible person because of her. Life sometimes was not easy, especially the time when she was sick, I was the one who had to take care of her as her only child. But still, she is that strong supermom I know. She also worked hard just to make sure that I don’t go to bed on an empty stomach. My mom is my hero, when I see her I see an angel. I see a queen because queens are not afraid to fail, they see failure as a stepping stone to greatness.

My mom is my hero because of her everlasting love, her amazing strength and endless passion. She is the glue that holds our family together, we always rely on her for everything. I love you my supermom.
