THE REASON

David – Simphiwe’s father

Nonhlanhla – Simphiwe’s mother

Yonela – Simphiwe’s sister

Simphiwe grew up living with both his parents and had a sister. Whenever there was something wrong with his sister, his father blamed him and beat him. One day his father came home before food was ready, he asked Simphiwe where was his food. Simphiwe told him that his mother was not feeling well so she couldn’t prepare food but there was bread. David went to their room and found his wife sleeping, he started hitting her. Simphiwe tried to stop him instead David told him that it was her responsibility to cook.

David would come home drunk demanding food with meat and if there was no meat Nonhlanhla would get beaten. Simphiwe witnessed everything. He then took this as a way of treating women.

Do you think Simphiwe’s upbringing justifies what he does to women?
