In the morning, the Gregors sent letters by email to work to inform them why they cannot come to work for the consecutive three days. Two hours after that, Joseph received a call from the hospital to update them about the condition of Cry. The doctor told Joseph that they suspect that Cry has breast cancer, so they must send her blood to the laboratory for reliable results to confirm the diagnosis and arrange a suitable treatment. The Doctor also informed him that Cry will be discharged after the completion of her surgery if she indeed has a breast cancer and agrees to undergo a mastectomy. After a day of waiting, her results arrived at the hospital from the Joburg Mediclinic. The doctor holding documents in his hands said to her, “it is sad to inform you that you have a breast cancer, and this implies that we have to cut off your breast so that they don’t cause damage to the other parts of your body.” Cry raised her upper body and wept nonstop. “How will I breastfeed my son? How? How?” she asked with a saddening voice as a rain of tears flowed out of her eyes. It felt as if she could just die and escape all the pressure on her chest.

The doctor called Joseph to inform him that the laboratory has determined Mrs. Smith has a breast cancer and must do an operation to save her other body parts from being affected by the cancer. After receiving this terrifying information, Joseph was shocked and felt bad for Cry. He didn’t want to think of it for a moment, as the call was on loudspeaker, Jocelyn became weak immediately. They were so sad and in confusion. Everything became unpleasant to them. They couldn’t do anything they enjoyed doing. A meal was never taken that night. Joseph fed Friday purity and soft porridge that night. The next day they went to buy him a huge tin of NAN so he can have milk to drink. When returning home, they received a call from Cry’s neighbor enquiring when last they spoke with her. Jocelyn told them of Cry’s condition and told them she is on her way to take Joy from them so she can stay with both Joy and Friday. Amogelang visited Cry’s house for two days without anyone opening the gate and the neighbors never noticed. On the third time, a day after the neighbors received the news about Cry, Amogelang was seen trying to find out if Cry is still not around. She was told by Cry’s neighbor that Cry is in the hospital and will only come back after some time. Amogelang went to check on her and just found out her best friend is in a terrible condition.

Joy always cried wanting to see her mother. She would throw herself down and cry hard until the veins on her neck were exposed. Jocelyn was patient with her and days after she got used to her mother’s absence at home, she adapted staying with the Gregors. The Gregors took her to the hospital sometimes to see her mother and that cheered her up and she remained hopeful that everything will be okay. Joseph was still upset of himself for being a cruel person. He wished he were kind at the first place. Friday who had not been breastfed by his mother found his weight decreasing. He seems to not yet have adapted to not being breastfed by his mother. The Gregors gave him milk and that’s what so far, they know could keep her good. They assumed if they keep feeding him NAN, soft porridge, and purity, he will develop well and grow.

Amogelang agrees a job offer as a house cleaner, and also agreed to take care of the kids while the Gregors were at work. Two weeks later, Amogelang took Friday to clinic for check up on the exact day stated in his clinic file for infants. When she got back, she told them that the doctor prescribed a list of things the baby should consume to boost his weight as she does not receive breast milk from her mother. The doctor also said that the baby has a considerable risk of being diabetic, as he no longer receives breast milk from his mother.

After the operation, Cry had passed away due to inducing excessive general anesthetic. The Gregors were informed of the death by the hospital’s receptionist. A funeral was arranged for her, and Jocelyn informed Cry’s close friends about the passing, and she was buried. The Gregors decided to adopt Cry’s children, as they now were orphans. Friday was now thin and bony. He began experiencing terrible allergies and asthma as a result of not being breastfed anymore. His body needed his mother’s milk to keep being resistant to infections. His immune system was weak, as if he was no longer eating anything at all. He became diabetic and this was diagnosed after experiencing frequent urination. Joy kept developing as a lot did not make sense to her. Her life was not really affected by the loss of her mama. However, all these experiences might affect her psychologically and emotionally while growing up.

The Gregors continued living their happy life after when Mrs. Gregor advised Mr. Gregor to stop feeling guilty of being unkind towards Cry. Joseph took her advice and promised her to give the children the best life they could get if their mother was still alive. They lived with the children as if they were their own blood. Joseph wished they were their blood children. He treated them well and fairly as a chicken hides its eggs by sitting on them. Jocelyn softly took care of them as a crocodile does to its offspring. If you were to take the offspring of a crocodile, it would follow your artifacts until it finds where you stay. Luckily, Friday got into a good state and developed and grew up. Joy was now big, and you could say she was already eight years old, but she was still five. The family lived happily from now on, and you could see smiles on their faces.
