A rift developed between our husbands – they had different ideals . Senior Tafai was getting old and initially, had thought the brothers would co-lead the commune. Now he was doubtful . He met with them along with the elders once a week , wanting to hear what direction each brother dreamed the community must go.

My husband and I wanted to set up a real school for the children of the community . We agreed that we wanted them to travel outside the commune to sell their craft , we had ideas about retail products: healthy juices, herbs to sell outside the commune and put proceeds in a trust for children of the community. We never wanted to let ties with overseas communes die . Flo agreed with us .

Her husband thought girls should not be educated in the new school , he said selling outside was aiding consumerism and ties with our outside communes must be cut off – Our commune was the one and only Zion . We did not need anyone else .

The couples drifted apart : my husband and I drove off once in a while in our bakkie to sell artwork and products .. we partied in dancehalls on our way back , having a glass of wine and steak . Flo was stuck home with a controlling husband who was increasingly becoming violent . I advised her to consider leaving . She was too attached .
