A strain developed in my marriage when Imani told me their father had called upon the brothers to come back home . I was in my late 20s , pursuing a degree in fine arts while running an NGO that educated the underprivileged children of the shabby side of Kingston . It was easier being black in Jamaica .I saw no use in going back to South Africa . We argued a lot : I had never desired children and not even news of Flo and Amani trying out for a baby moved me . I did not want children then. This was something we had failed to talk about before we ran off and got married .

I relented when he told me his father may be on his death bed . We travelled home and met with Flo and her husband : we were all back . Flo was also unhappy about coming back , her folk music was doing well in England along with her novels . She felt bitter about separating with her mother again . Amani had also changed and I suspected for the worst . He had always been conservative but now Flo had to cover her hair and wear shabby dresses . He resented her success . He said my husband and I had been living too liberally in Jamaica. The only upside was that we were reunited : the jewels , who had always been there for each other .
