“What’s on your mind?” Samantha asked closing her bible “Your mind is clearly not here, so you might as well spit it out.”

I sighed “It’s my birthday next week.”

“Oh,” She said and her eyebrows furrowed “Ohh.” She said once she realised that I have not once celebrated my birthday in the last 12 years now soon to be 13.

“We can do something.”

I shook my head “You have already done so much for me.”

“Your birthday comes once in 12 months, you have to celebrate it.” She said smiling.

“What have you always wanted to do?”

I shrugged my shoulders, “Go to the beach, feel the fresh salty air and the sand under my feet.” I said, “I never once went a beach and when I was young, I always wanted to go there.”

“Maybe one day you will go.”

I chucked “I’m going to spend the rest of my life in here so no I doubt it.” I said “But it doesn’t matter, just your visit will be enough.”

She nodded and went back to reading scriptures from the Bible.

“I’ll be here on your birthday.” She said before she left, I smiled knowing that she will indeed be here. It felt weird looking forward to my birthday, I have spent so many years treating it like it was just another ordinary day but now I was looking forward to having it.

I didn’t care that I would not get anything but just the fact that I would spend my day with someone made my heart get fuzzy with joy.
