Bavumile
It was Wednesday, and the middle of the month and I was being taken outside. The bright sun light blinded my eyes the second I stepped outside.
It felt weird being outside, having the warm sun on my skin, I look up at the blue sky and there were no clouds in sight.
When I looked at tge horizon, there I saw her, Samantha in her summer dress filled with sunflowers. Ut was hard to miss her, she was the only one who was full of warmth in this cold place. She had placed a blanket and some snacks on top of the blanket.
“What is this,” I say half giggling when I was in earshot.
She shrugged nonchalantly looking like one innocent kid, her smile was so big it could brighten one’s day.
“I brought a picnic to you.” She said “Come sit down.”
I sat down on the cushion with my legs crossed awkwardly with the chains, I looked around and guards were splattered around as if they were waiting for me to make a run for it.
“Remember you once told me how much you miss having a picnic, so I pulled a few strings and… Ta da.”
I had said that in passing, that I was surprised she even remembered “You remembered.”
She waved her hand like it was no big deal “Of course I remembered.”
But to me it was a big deal, the fact that I had said that in passing and she remembered made me feel important like I mattered too.
“Thank you.”
“Okay let’s eat I’m hungry, this is called a wrap or shawarma.”
I took the wrap thing and took a bite, it felt weird on my mouth especially after eating prison food for so long.
I watched her as she took a bite off a burger and a cheese sauce got left behind on the side of her mouth.
She was a refreshing sight to look at, she was not like many girls that I remembered who cared about the weight they would put on, or looking a certain way.
Samantha was different, so different that she pulled the strings off my heart effortlessly and that scared the hell out of me.
