Melusi

“How’s Makukhanye doing?” Steve asked. I took a sip of my scotch and leaned back in my chair. “She’s good. And she’s doing really well in school.” Steve nodded. “That’s great to hear.” He paused, and stared at me. “So, what’s the story with this Sthembiso guy?” My stomach churned at the mention of his name. “There’s nothing to tell.”

Steve chuckled. “Oh, I think there is. Is he Makukhanye’s boyfriend?” My fists clenched, and my blood surged. “Definitely not her boyfriend.”

Steve looked amused. “So, you have a problem with Makukhanye dating?” I scowled. “The thought of her with a boyfriend leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”

Steve drank his scotch, and turned to look out the window. “Now you know how I felt when you started dating Melokuhle.” He turned back to me, a hint of a smile on his face. “At least the poor guy didn’t kidnap Makukhanye. It could’ve been worse.”

Steve’s face turned serious. “From what I gathered, he’s really into Makukhanye. He wouldn’t have come to face you and risked getting beaten.”

I shrugged, feeling drained from the conversation.

“You don’t want Makukhanye to resent you for standing in her way.” Steve’s words struck a chord, but I couldn’t shake off my concerns. “What if she gets hurt?” My voice trembled.

I had always done my best to protect Makukhanye, and the thought of not being able to shield her from harm was unbearable. “I did my absolute best to shield her. I can’t do that if she gets involved with someone.” Steve sighed, “You can’t protect her from everything.”

I sighed, feeling defeated. “But I can try.” Steve shook his head. “You’ve done a wonderful job raising Makukhanye, but now it’s time to let her go. You’re keeping her in a cage, and she needs to spread her wings.”

I whispered, “I don’t think I can.” Steve’s voice was gentle. “I know it’s hard, but you have to let go. I felt the same way about Melokuhle, but look how far she’s come. She’s happy, and she loves you.” Steve’s words hit home. I knew he was right.
