most of you will finish matric
few of you with distinctions
but what’s next…I dare ask ?!
life after matric remains a confused world
when ur peers leave their homes
and register at their chosen institution
but is it their choice…really ?!
I dare can tell you now
For most of them, it’s not their choice
the course they do it’s not their pick
they just pick to go with the flow
peer pressure remains the order of the day
where past classmates ask about your whereabouts
where your class of 22 ask which course you’re doing
and you have to act cool and lie to yourself
lie to yourself about the wrong course you are doing
lie to yourself about the wrong institution you are at
cos you only try hard to please your peers
while your parents are also praising your wrong path
but…
deep in your heart, you know your passion
deep in your heart, you know what drives you
but you’re scared to follow your pure heart
bcos you don’t want to fail alone
I dare say…
rather follow your heart and pass
then go with a group and fail
it’s better to fail following your path
rather than fail on the darkest road
I write this poem chopping onions
I write this poem with teary eyes
cos every year it’s the same script
matriculated yes but without the right path
I wish matriculants can rather wait
wait after matric and take a gap year
it might seem long but it’s worth it
cos it teaches you more about yourself
choosing the wrong course is suicide
You spend the whole three years unhappy
doing something knowing you don’t like
while paying the fees every month without fail
I dare plead with you matriculants
it’s still a long way to go in this life
rather sit home and take a gap year
than impress your friend with a fake course
…AMEN…
