You excel where you invest your energy, focus, time and resources, if you can master this you will never feel like you are behind/you are inadequate and lack something. In life, what makes us unique is the combination of our passions and aspirations, which is unlike any other in the world. You might love soccer, singing, and art—while others may share these interests, the unique blend of your passions, values, and aspirations sets you apart.

When I excel in something but see someone who is better in that area, I don’t feel envious or belittle myself. I recognize that we all have areas where we shine. For example, I might have been a top student in mathematics in high school, but if I chose a different path in university while a classmate continued with math, they would naturally surpass me in that field. It’s pointless to compare myself to them or remind them how I used to be good and better than them in math, or feel bad that they are now good at math because they advanced; my focus has shifted to other pursuits. Perhaps I’m now pursuing music, where I can excel. The reason many people struggle with contentment is that they compare themselves to others on different journeys.

It’s also important to be mindful of those around you who might put you under unnecessary pressure. Family and friends will always have opinions, but you must be secure in your own path. People might say things like, “I know someone your age who has achieved this,” or, “I know someone who is doing the same thing you are doing and they bought this and that,” or, “I know this person who studied the same course you did and they are working,” or, “I know someone who went to school with you, they graduated and now have a beautiful house.” You might also hear, “I know someone younger than you who is doing amazingly well,” or, “I know someone who didn’t even finish school but is now rich.”

Don’t let such comparisons overwhelm you. We are all on different journeys—some start from a disadvantage, others from a privileged position. We will achieve our goals in our own time, at the appointed time.
