Quotation marks (‘    ’) or (“    ”) are also called speech marks or inverted commas.

  • Quotation marks show the words that a person says (direct speech). They can either be double or single. Example: ‘Hello,’ Unatihi greeted her, ‘are you waiting for someone?’ The words that Unathi said (Hello, are you waiting for someone?) are in the quotation marks. (Double quotation marks example: “Hello,” Unatihi greeted her, “are you waiting for someone?”) As in the example, the second quotation marks should appear after the other punctuation (comma, full stop, question mark or exclamation mark).
  • Quotation marks can show titles of books and films (or these can be underlined, or printed in italics). Example: Have you read ‘Broken Promises’ by Ros Haden? (Other ways of writing this are: Have you read Broken Promises by Ros Haden? OR Have you read Broken Promises by Ros Haden?)
