Like all other adjectives, the demonstrative adjectives “this, that, these, those” describe nouns. They are followed by a noun:

  • Pass me that ruler, please.
  • This chair is uncomfortable.
  • Those soft chairs look inviting.
  • These enormous medical books are very heavy to carry.
  • However, “this, that, these and those” are demonstrative pronouns when they are not followed by a noun.

  • This is very wrong!
  • That must stop immediately.
  • Do you like these?
  • Those always give trouble.
