Unprotected sex

Mickey has unprotected sex with Milo, and so could have got infected with HIV as well as other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Unfortunately she can’t immediately find out if she is HIV positive, or if she has caught an STD, because these infections take a while to appear in a person’s system. You need to have the tests a few weeks after the unprotected sex. You can read more about safe sex here.

PEP

PEP is post-exposure prophylaxis – a medication that you can take up to 72 hours after unprotected sex to reduce the risk of contracting HIV/Aids. Mickey took it because of her one-night stand.  It’s not something that is recommended as a standard HIV/Aids prevention tool, but is more for an emergency. You can read more about PEP here.
