“Xenophobia is dreadfully taking us decades backwards. With all the technological advances and strides we have made it is alarming to see people fighting each other because of their different nationalities. Stern education is needed among most South Africans about other nations in Africa and, if necessary, it should be introduced as a subject in the high school curriculum. Most South Africans don’t travel at all and they will always live in their bottled world, ready to do anything to defend it at all costs.”

Sister Sylvia Simpwalo of Nazareth House in Johannesburg instituted an antiretroviral and hospice programme for mostly non-South Africans who do not qualify for government-funded assistance. The programme caters for more than 2 000 patients.
