“Within extremely circumscribed lives and ongoing struggle the women of Kopanang find an expansive creativity that not only empowers them, enabling them to believe in themselves — perhaps for the first time — but also sustains their families and gives them hope for the future. This is an experience of absolute freedom and joy.”

Sheila Flynn is a Dominican sister and founder of the Kopanang Community Trust on the East Rand, which provides women affected by HIV/Aids and unemployment with community support and an income derived through craft-making.
