Ntando and the family helped to decorate the living room and the outside veranda where the party was to be held, and in no time the whole place was glistening with ribbons and balloons.

When Mbali wanted to help with the chores her aunts told her that it was her time to be spoilt rotten, it was her day after all, and she was starting a new chapter in life, a chapter called ‘adulthood’. The only thing she was going to be allowed to do was to make herself beautiful, because everyone was ready with their phones and cameras to take pictures of the memorable and precious event.

On the day of the party, a lovely Saturday morning, Mbali was woken up by the noise from the kitchen as many of her relatives arrived and helped with the food preparations.

“Yhoo! So many gifts!” said Mbali, as she peeped in to her parent’s bedroom, but she was soon chased away by one of the aunts. She was not supposed to see the gifts before the party had started. Boxes and boxes were piled up against the wall. More than only celebrating her reaching 21 years of age, they were now celebrating the gift of life itself.

“Oh my niece, you have turned out to be such a gorgeous young woman. You look just like me when I was your age,” said one of her aunts, after smothering her with kisses.

Every one roared with laughter because the aunt did not look one bit like Mbali!

“Thank you Aunty, I am glad you are here. I want to grow old and be just like you.”

The party started around two o’clock when the adults had their share of wishing Mbali the best in life, and everyone thanked the Almighty God for sparing her.

When sunset came Mbali and her friends, Ntando and all the cousins, nieces and nephews danced happily, continuing late into the night. Plus, it was the first time Mbali ever saw her father dance! Mbali’s party was going to be remembered as one unforgettable event.

Then, right near the end, Mbali looked up to see Mike standing by the door.

She took a deep breath. She didn’t know if he could forgive her, but she had to try. She had to apologise to him. She was ashamed and embarrassed, but she would ask for forgiveness because Mike, though he had nothing, treated her with love and respect.

The End.
