Seithati’s family already knew about her affair with Sabelo. Dikeledi and Kutlwano had gone to Bloemfontein, to campus, to try to rebuke Seithati, but she told them where to get off.

“You, Dikeledi, leave me alone. Get out of here! Only now you want to be a mother. Make your own child. I am a woman, and you are not going to tell me how to live.”

“Seithati, your mother…”

“Don’t provoke me, Kutlwano! Whose mother?” Seithati interrupted Kutlwano. “Kutlwano, don’t pretend to be a father to me. You are not my father. I don’t need my father!” Seithati said, and left them in her room.

Since then, there was no way of talking with Seithati. Dikeledi and Kutlwano were only left to pray for Seithati to be saved and protected in her ways.

The following year, Seithati had to repeat some of her subjects. Sabelo was taking care of her, and some of her other boyfriends would pop in here and there. In March that year, Seithati found out that she was pregnant. She knew that the child was Sabelo’s because he was the only man she slept with without protection. She informed Sabelo and told him that she wanted to have an abortion. Sabelo objected to the idea.

“Seithati, I will take care of you. Just think about it…our baby is going to be beautiful and smart. Don’t think such things.”

“But Sabelo, I’m still in school,” she said, with a low voice.

“I get that. School will always be there, nana.”

“And Sabelo, you have a wife and children. What will happen if they find out?”

“Look, I’m going to get a divorce. We will start a new life together. I will give you money to keep for yourself so that after giving birth, you can go back to school,” Sabelo promised her, and kissed her on the forehead.

They decided to go to Welkom to inform Seithati’s mother. Sabelo promised Dikeledi that he would take care of Seithati and their child. He informed her that as soon as Seithati gave birth, she would ask that Dikeledi be the one to take care of the baby so that Seithati could go back to school. Dikeledi agreed, herself and Kutlwano. They were very happy even though they were initially against Seithati dating a married adult.

Sabelo divorced his wife and informed her that he had a child outside their marriage. Even though he lost a lot of money because of divorce, he was content to live all his days with Seithati. That year passed; the child was born the following year.

Seithati moved to Welkom and stayed there for a few weeks after giving birth. While she was in Welkom, her school friends often visited. The person who visited the most was a fellow named Tshepo. Tshepo and Seithati were girlfriend and boyfriend when they were in Grade 9. Tshepo was the first guy that Seithati loved, the one she first had intercourse with. The problem was that Tshepo was flirting with other girls, falling in love with other girls, and consequently, this changed Seithati. Nonetheless, they had put all that behind them now, and Seithati was very happy when Tshepo came to see her. Their love rekindled, but Seithati informed Tshepo that the father of the child, Sabelo, was still in the picture and had divorced his wife so that he could start a life with Seithati. Tshepo did not understand what made Seithati, such a beautiful girl, give herself to “an old man like Sabelo”.
