A week later, Nkanyiso organised a party to celebrate their freedom from the past. The old Prophet was their guest of honour.

MaNdlovu was thrilled. “God is amazing! Oh my children, thank you for being here for me, for loving me, taking good care of me and showing me true love at my age. May God bless you and give you many children, without more complications.”

“Well I’m happy Gogo. I wouldn’t know what true love was, if it wasn’t for the teachings you instilled in my husband. He is what he is because of you,” Nombulelo said.

With all the festivities provided by Nkanyiso the neighbours struggled to leave the compound. Yes, the neighbours agreed, Nkanyiso and Nombulelo, and even MaNdlovu, deserved a fresh start. The old scandals, and the demons that had been provoked, needed to be laid to rest.

The neighbours were having such a good time that they did not see Nkanyiso take Nombulelo by the hand and lead her into the house, nor did they notice that the couple did not return to the party. MaNdlovu shuffled past the closed bedroom door, paused a moment as if listening to something deep within herself coming alive, and then smiling, moved on.

Nine months later, Nombulelo gave birth to two bouncing boys who MaNdlovu named Nkazimulo (Glory of God) and Nkosenhle (A Good God). Everyone was overjoyed and thanked God for the blessing.

Nkanyiso had a verse from the Book of Matthew engraved on a small plaque that he fixed above the door of their Musgrave flat: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”.

Every time his head passed under it when he returned home in the evening to his family, he smiled, then he would slowly shut the door behind him, closing out the sounds of the street and the outside world. Always his wife was waiting for him and he would walk into her open arms, two little boys hanging onto their legs, and tell her the story of his day.
