The hands of time turn very slow on Sundays. I don’t know if this is applicable only to me, but I find Sundays very slow and boring. There’s nothing to do but sit about lazily waiting for Monday. Especially if you’re like me and don’t attend church that much.

So, today is a Sunday, and I’m sitting all alone in my room and doing nothing. I don’t feel like doing anything today! It’s 10 a.m. and I’m still in bed and I have no plans whatsoever of waking up. I mean, it’s a Sunday for crying out loud! Wake up and do what? Wake up for who?

“No man wants to marry a lazy girl, Zinzi. Wake up!” I can hear my mother’s voice saying in my head.

It’s really funny how we, women, are often told that a man doesn’t want a woman like this or that. A good woman obeys her man. A good woman doesn’t wear this or that. Society polices women and girls, but doesn’t do the same with boys.

They can do anything they like, anytime they want to and nobody ever tells them anything! Nobody ever tells them that a good man does this or that. Nobody tells them that a good man doesn’t come home drunk in the wee hours of the morning. Or that ‘no woman wants to marry a man who beats her up whenever he feels like it.’

In fact, now that I think of it, nobody tells a man that when a woman is dressed in a mini-skirt, she’s not pleading with them to rape her. She is just wearing it because it’s what she wants to wear. I can’t count the endless times my mom chastised me for wearing something short because it’s ‘inappropriate’ or ‘too revealing’. Inappropriate for who?

Everybody thinks that they can tell a woman how to behave, but nobody dares to tell a man the very same thing. I think that’s a load of crap! If I want to wake up at 12 noon because I feel like it nobody has any right to tell me otherwise. More so, to tell me that “no man wants to marry a lazy girl…”

It’s a Sunday. I don’t feel like waking up. So, I’m going to stay in bed until I feel the need to do so. Whether a man wants to marry me because I wake up late or not is the least of my concerns right now! I just thought I should say this and go back to sleep.
